Two sanitation workers have become heroes after rescuing a kidnapped girl from a registered sex offender. The abductor stole the ten-year-old victim and drove away with her in his car so he could do God knows what to his intended victim, Jalisa Lasalle. Thankfully, an Amber Alert went out to people in the area, and two unsuspecting heroes – Dion Merrick and Brandon Antoine – recognized the sex offender’s car from the alert.
Merrick and Antoine work as sanitation workers with the Pelican Waste & Debris department. They were on their route at 7 am when they noticed the child abductor’s vehicle from the Amber Alert. Without hesitating, they acted and were able to rescue the girl from her would-be molester.
The sanitation workers used their massive garbage truck to block in the kidnapper’s car. The man had no way of making it back on the road after his car got closed in by the truck.
Police arrived after the sanitation workers blocked in the car. They found sex offender Michael Sereal (above) and the little girl in the vehicle. They arrested Sereal and rescued the ten-year-old victim, who has been identified as Lasalle. Sereal is now booked in the local jail while the girl is being reunited with her loved ones.
Merrick took cellphone footage after he and Antoine used the garbage struck to block in the sex offender. The footage shows the moment police arrest Sereal. Merrick narrates the scene for viewers of the video.
“Thank god they got him now,” said Merrick. “I just saved that little girl’s life. They got him, thanks to two Pelican drivers. That girl is ten years old. The car right there, the girl is safe right now, thank God, because I have a little girl.”
Merrick (above) is also a father of a little girl, so he knows how important it was to rescue the child from the grip of the sex offender.
He became suspicious of the vehicle after he saw that it matched the description from the Amber Alert.
“Something told me… what’s that car doing off in the field like that? That’s the dude with the little girl,” hero Merrick said.
Louisiana law enforcement professionals thanked Merrick and Antoine for doing a “great job.” The officer could be heard congratulating the sanitation workers for busting the sex offender and would-be child molester. Merrick deflects the compliment by saying that he was “just doing my job.”
“I called the cops. They saved that little girl’s life,” he said. I blocked that truck in, make sure [he] couldn’t get out.”
After the rescue, Pelican Waste & Debris gave the two heroes a “huge shoutout” on social media along with the praise, “Way to go, guys!”
After her rescue, Jalisa Lasalle was given a complete medical examination. The girl was reported missing on Monday afternoon. It was not until early the next morning that she was saved by the sanitation workers.
“Local authorities were immediately contacted, and Sereal was taken into custody,” the New Iberia police department said. “Sereal was taken into custody by St. Martin Parish Deputies and then transferred to the custody of the New Iberia Police Department where he is being arrested for aggravated kidnapping. Jalisa was found safe!”
